Season 1 ( episodes 1-24 ) was premiered in Turkey from 5th January 2011 until 22nd June 2011. The series has a star studded cast, and lots of new young actors that now we know and love in today’s series.

The story is based on the life of Sultan Suleiman the longest reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Fear not if a series with war isn’t your thing this also brings you all the goings on in his harem.

Alexandria has been captured after her family were killed in the Crimea. Her fiance is missing and she is taken to the palace of the Sultan to join his harem. She strongly defies everyone until she is told that if she becomes a favourite of the Sultan then her life will be much better. If she can give him a son then the world could be her oyster. From then on she is determined to get noticed by the Sultan.

After capturing the Sultan’s attention, she spends a night with him and eventually falls in love with him. After converting to Islam, Süleyman changes her name to Hürrem . Subsequently, she gives birth to her first son, Şehzade Mehmed, and rises to the top of the court. At the same time, Mahidevran, a senior hatun (lady) and mother of the Sultan’s eldest son, Mustafa, gets worried when she notices Süleyman is not spending time with her anymore.

A year later, Hürrem gives birth to her first and only daughter, Mihrimah Sultan. Meanwhile, Süleyman departs for his campaign in Belgrade and kills the husband of a woman named Victoria, who will be later sent to kill the Sultan.

Also, Leo, Hürrem’s fiancé during her early life in the Crimea, arrives in an attempt to find her. Hürrem who discovers his presence tries to hide the truth, but İbrahim decides to use it as against her.

Victoria who has been renamed to Sadika following entering the harem, becomes a favourite of everyone, and a trusted servant. After many intrigues, she attempts to assassinate Süleyman, by holding a dagger on his throat. Meanwhile, because of the rivalry and developing hatred between İbrahim and Hürrem, he tries to blackmail and poison her but Leo saves her by eating the poisoned Turkish delight and dies, proving his love and honor.

BEHIND THE SCENES DURING FILMING

On first glance some may have been put off by thinking its a series about fighting battles, however while there is some of that it mostly concentrates on the issues in and around the Sultan’s palace.

The costumes made for the series are amazing and very detailed.

The sets are very authentic, and while the story line of the Sultan remains true to history Meral Okay has done a great job of bringing the harem to life. The series has everything from romance to murder. No wonder it was a hit worldwide and the rights to the series sold around the world.
