KURSUN EPISODE 7 FINALE ENGLISH SUMMARY
Don’t mess with Prosecutor Orhan. That’s a lesson for criminals. Fahri Onal may try to save his life by refusing to say who killed Orhan’s father, but he can’t save his son Serdar’s life unless he tells the truth. Orhan’s phone call to Bunyamin puts the play in motion. Onal hears his son’s screams and decides to tell what he knows. The former prosecutor, Timur Yilmaz, whom Orhan jailed, wanted the senior Atmaca killed, but Fahri doesn’t know who did the deed. He does know that as a result of the criminal indictments Orhan’s father made, Nuri Kargi became very powerful. Kerim Pasha’s power derived from secret organizations formed after WWII to fight communism that evolved into criminal activity.
At his home, Nuri is annoyed that neither Fahri nor Serdar can be located. When Feraye asks Nuri why he’s concerned about the Onals, Nuri says that if Fahri talks, the situation will be difficult to control. Feraye mentions that the newspaper article about Fahri’s signature on a false document is written in Leyla’s style and Nuri questions whether or not she’s jealous. At that moment, the new Hasan (Vural) enters to say Kerim Pasha wants Nuri and they must go together since their meeting place has changed. Hasan also tells Nuri he must wear a blindfold.
When Harun arrives at the Atmaca country house to arrest Fahri, Orhan tells him that Kerim Pasha’s underground organization is huge and widespread. The secrecy allowed the members to indulge in smuggling and other forms of racketeering. Harun says it will be hard to protect Fahri Onal since they don’t know who to trust in or out of government, but Orhan has a plan. They will pretend that Onal left the country, and while his criminal partners search for him overseas, Orhan will find his father’s killer.
In his meeting with Kerim Pasha, Nuri is told that Fahri is no longer a problem. The problem is Nuri’s weakness, his daughter Leyla who wrote the newspaper article about Fahri’s corruption. Kerim Pasha insinuates that Nuri needs to take care of Leyla or someone else will.
Orhan takes Fahri to the cabin where Serdar is being held. Father and son are allowed to meet before Serdar is freed until his trial. Fahri will remain hidden in the cabin until Timur, the former prosecutor, is questioned. Serdar will have to be quiet about his father’s whereabouts or risk Fahri’s death at the hands of Nuri or Kerim Pasha. Aydin will return to jail, but he will be freed since his crime wasn’t serious and the authorities know he was kidnapped from the police van. Serdar leaves the cabin but not before threatening Orhan, Bunyamin and Aydin.
Leyla, Cihan, a friend, and Mr. Ibrahim, the editor of the newspaper that published the Fahri Onal article, are celebrating the success of that edition at a local restaurant. Leyla goes to a phone to call Orhan before a waiter deliberately spills tea on the editor. Mr. Ibrahim goes to the men’s room to clean up when Hasan/Vural enters. After making a threat and tussling, Hasan injects the editor with a drug. Ibrahim staggers out into the restaurant proper where despite the efforts of a nurse, he dies.
Orhan visits Tomris in the hospital and while he’s there, Rifat comes in to tell him that he saw Leyla in the waiting room and she didn’t look good. Orhan finds Leyla and she tells him about Ibrahim. She doesn’t believe he had a heart attack. She thinks he’s a victim of the criminal underworld because he published her article, and she’s inconsolable because she feels guilt for his death. Orhan takes her home and tells her to rest and not give up hope that together they will see justice prevail. When Leyla enters her home, the housekeeper tells her she has a visitor. She finds her father, Nuri, waiting for her. She’s furious to find him there and tells him about Ibrahim. Nuri isn’t moved by the editor’s death for he “lost his humanity long ago,” but he tells her to stop collaborating with Orhan or more people will die. He pretends he doesn’t know who wrote the article, but he tells her to stay away from the prosecutor or he won’t be able to protect her or her mother.
Nuri sits alone on the patio of his home looking very perturbed. When Feraye tells him not to worry, he says the prosecutor has built a wall between him and Fahri, and if the wall falls, he will be crushed by the debris. He’s afraid he’s losing control, but Feraye says there is nothing he can’t do; he’s handled court cases before without any problem. Kerim Pasha enters to tell Nuri that Fahri Onal has absconded to Germany, but he has men in Frankfort who will take care of him. Now, he says, Nuri must take care of his daughter. Nuri says she won’t pry into their business anymore because the death of the editor really frightened her.
After Aydin’s court hearing, he is free to guard Fahri Onal. Orhan goes to the Attorney General to ask permission to interview Timur Yilmaz about the false autopsy report he made Onal sign. Before Orhan can leave the courthouse, he’s told Leyla is in his office. She’s there to say she’s afraid of losing him if he continues to pursue the criminals who have orchestrated so many murders, but she still doesn’t admit she’s Nuri’s daughter.
Bunyamin is with Tomris in hospital when Aydin comes to see how Tomris is healing. After that brief visit, Aydin goes to check on Fahri Onal. Rifat has been kept out of the loop of this arrangement so far, but his curiosity leads him to follow Aydin to the cabin in the woods. Hiding behind a tree, he sees Fahri come outside for air.
Orhan has a brief meeting with Timur Yilmaz, but Yilmaz refuses to answer any questions unless he can see Leyla Devrim. At the newspaper office, Leyla is subdued as she mindlessly clears her desk. Feraye comes in and tells Arzu, Leyla, and Cihan to get busy. When Arzu explains they are depressed about editor Ibrahim’s death, Feraye very callously says that’s what happens when he publishes such stressful news. At that moment, Orhan calls Leyla and asks her to interview Yilmaz. When she arrives, Yilmaz says he will speak to her alone or not at all, so Orhan leaves the room. Yilmaz doesn’t tell Leyla anything about Orhan’s father’s death, just that she should tell her father, Nuri Kargi, to get him out of prison. If she doesn’t, he will tell everyone who she really is. Yilmaz leaves the room, and when Orhan enters, Leyla, who is shocked to learn that Yilmaz knows her, will not answer his questions. She demands to know what he did to Fahri and how he got Yilmaz’s name. Orhan says that’s not why she’s there, but she only says Yilmaz didn’t say anything about his father before she abruptly leaves.
Serdar responds to a call from Nuri who wants to know why his father went abroad. Serdar says he and his father aren’t close, but he probably wanted to get away from the stress for awhile. Nuri asks about the bandage on his face and Serdar says he was in prison where things like that happen. Nuri then tells Serdar he can take his father’s place while he’s away, but Nuri is obviously suspicious about Serdar’s statements. The meeting is interrupted when Leyla comes to see Nuri. She tells him that Timur Yilmaz threatened to expose her as Nuri’s daughter if he didn’t get Yilmaz out of jail. Nuri warns her again that she needs to get away from Orhan or they will all be destroyed. He says he’s merely the tip of an ice berg of crime and no one is safe. As Leyla drives away from Nuri’s house, she is stopped by Orhan who has followed her. He demands to know why she’s there and she says he owns the newspaper. He presses her to tell him what she’s hiding from him, but she won’t answer him.
Hasan/Vural tells Kerim Pasha that the men in Germany said Fahri Onal did not get off the only plane from Istanbul, and there’s no indication that he went elsewhere in Europe. Kerim Pasha realizes that Orhan has hidden Fahri and he tasks Hasan with finding and killing him.
At the hospital, Rifat is visiting his sister Tomris when Hasan/Vural drops a note in front of him which tells Rifat to follow him. Rifat walks down the hall toward Hasan who directs him to go into a room. There Rifat finds Nuri waiting for him. Nuri says he wondered what had happened to him, and Rifat said since he had his sister beaten, he didn’t want to help Nuri anymore. Nuri says Tomris is alive thanks to him, but if he didn’t want to cooperate, he would let Bunyamin know that his son has stabbed him in the back. When Rifat asks what he wants, Nuri says Orhan is hiding someone and he wants him to find out where. If he does, Nuri says he will forgive the arrogance Rifat has shown him.
At the cabin, Orhan asks Fahri why Yilmaz won’t talk, but Fahri says he doesn’t know. Orhan says Fahri will stay there until Yilmaz confesses about his father’s murder. Outside, frustrated and angry, Orhan discusses with Bunyamin and Aydin what to do to make Yilmaz talk. He decides that they will have Riza, a friend in prison, hurt Yilmaz enough that he will have surgery and say that Nuri ordered the hit. Maybe then he will talk. Orhan sends a note to Riza.
Orhan waits for Leyla at her house to ask her again what’s wrong, but she won’t tell him the truth, only that she’s afraid of losing him. She says they should stop pursuing the criminals and retire to a small village where he can practice law and she can write mundane articles about local events. He says they will do that someday after he settles the questions about his father’s murder and the criminal organization that has killed so many of their loved ones. He leaves her house and goes to visit Bunyamin to talk about the conflict he feels with his commitment to his father’s case and his emotional commitment to Leyla.
Meanwhile, Rifat the “Rat” has told Nuri where Orhan is hiding Fahri. Hasan/Vural slips in behind the cabin and shoots the guards. Oh, great! How stupid! Orhan and Bunyamin left an ax in the cabin. When Fahri hears the gunshots, he bangs on the door to get out, but when that doesn’t work, he gets the ax and chops open a window only to be exposed to Hasan who shoots him. Wonderful! Rifat strikes again and Orhan loses his bargaining chip. Aydin chases Hasan, but he gets away.
At Kerim Pasha’s hiding hole, Nuri is led in by Hasan and told to take care of Timur Yilmaz. Since Fahri is dead, Timur is the only link to the organization that Orhan would have. Kerim Pasha wants him to leave prison in a coffin, and he warns Nuri once again about Leyla.
Orhan, Aydin and Bunyamin can’t figure out how Nuri and Kerim Pasha discovered their hiding place for Fahri. No one suspects Rifat, but they know Timur is their last hope for information.
Riza attacks Timur in the bathroom at the prison. In the morning Leyla hears the news about Fahri’s death. As she tries to reach Orhan by telephone, Harun comes to take her to the prosecutor’s office. Orhan has decided the only way to get her to talk is by exercising his legal authority, but when she comes to his office, she answers his questions the same way she did before: she doesn’t have to identify her sources or the confidential information she received; Nuri Kargi is her boss and the owner of the newspaper she works for and their business is confidential. Having stalled Orhan’s investigation, she leaves his office and goes directly to the Attorney General’s office where she makes a complaint against Prosecutor Orhan Atmaca.
Orhan is called to the Attorney General’s office. He says he knows he overstepped his bounds, but Leyla is hiding vital information and he was trying to get her to reveal that information. He asks for one more day to try to get Timur Yilmaz to talk, and the Attorney General allows him another day. Outside the office, Leyla waits for him, but when he comes out, he’s angry. He tells her he won’t give up his investigation, he knows she’s afraid of something, and since she has changed in her attitude, he believes she’s “stabbing him in the back” by her refusal to divulge the truth.
Nuri receives a call from Kerim Pasha who tells him that he was supposed to kill Timur, not wound him. Nuri says he hasn’t done anything to Yilmaz yet. Kerim Pasha wants to know who would attack him, but Nuri doesn’t know. Kerim Pasha says Nuri has failed again, but this time, he will have Hasan take care of Yilmaz. That statement is also an indirect threat on Leyla’s life.
Yilmaz wakes up in hospital to find himself handcuffed to the bed. The doctor tells him that his surgery has been successful and he just needs to rest. Outside in the hallway, Orhan and Aydin are accosted by Serdar who accuses them of killing his father. Orhan tells him he won’t answer his accusation because he knows Serdar is grieving, but Aydin pulls him away saying they didn’t kill Fahri and they are trying to find out who did. Just as Orhan turns to go into Yilmaz’s room, he comes face to face with Hasan, dressed as a policeman, who pulls a gun on Orhan. A child’s voice says, “Baba,” and Hasan/Vural turns to see Gulce and Ozan in the hallway (we don’t know why they are at the hospital). Ozan runs toward Vural, but he goes to Orhan instead and wraps his arms around him, saying, “Baba, don’t.” The gun in Vural’s hand wavers. He is arrested by two other policemen who are present as protection for Yilmaz. Before being taken away, Vural hugs his son.
Hasan/Vural tells the Attorney General everything he knows about Nuri Kargi and Kerim Pasha. When the truth is divulged about those two, Timur Yilmaz knows he can’t be saved from prison, so he also tells everything he knows. Nuri and Kerim Pasha are arrested by Harun and stand before the judge with Vural and Serdar. (We assume they are found guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors).
Leyla and her mother put dust covers on the furniture and prepare to leave their home, but before they can drive away, Orhan appears to say he can’t believe she would leave him without saying goodbye. She says she didn’t think he would want to see her, but Orhan tells Leyla the past is behind them, the case is closed, and now they can talk about their future.
She says she couldn’t admit to being the daughter of a monster, and she felt as guilty as her father at her betrayal, but Orhan says it’s over and she mustn’t go. He has tickets for a play. Now they can move forward with their life together. THE END
